An economic downturn refers to a period of negative economic growth, typically characterized by a decrease in economic activity, rising unemployment, and a decline in consumer spending. It is often marked by a contraction in the overall economy, including a decrease in the production of goods and services, a drop in business investment, and a decrease in the overall standard of living. Economic downturns can be caused by a variety of factors, such as a decrease in consumer confidence, a financial crisis, or a decrease in international trade. During an economic downturn, governments and central banks often implement policies to stimulate the economy and mitigate the negative effects. **
