In Greek mythology, Charon is the ferryman who transports the souls of the deceased across the river Styx to the underworld. The coins placed on the eyes or in the mouths of the deceased are payment for Charon's services, allowing the souls to be ferried across the river and enter the realm of the dead. Without payment, the souls would be left to wander the shores of the river for a hundred years. Therefore, Charon uses the coins as payment for his role as the ferryman of the underworld. **
